Is this you?

Your home was built for it

Craftsman and NW Contemporary architecture visibly loses character under asphalt.

Your current shake roof is aging

Cedar fails section by section — restoration versus replacement is a real decision with real money attached.

You want it and can maintain it

Cleaned and treated every 3–5 years, cedar gives 25–35 years of the best-looking roof on the street.

Considering the look without the upkeep

Modern composite shakes fake it well. We install those too, and we'll show you both.

The whole truth about cedar

Number 1 grade hand-split shakes or sawn shingles, stainless or hot-dipped fasteners (electro-galvanized ones bleed rust streaks in five years), interlayment felt between courses, and copper or zinc ridge strips that suppress the moss PNW cedar otherwise farms. Skip the maintenance and cedar dies young — we put the schedule and costs in writing before you sign anything.

How we do it

  1. 1

    Honest suitability review

Shade, tree cover, and your appetite for maintenance — some homes shouldn't have cedar, and we say so.

  2. 2

    Grade and material selection

You'll see the actual bundles, not just brochure photos.

  3. 3

    Install, 3–6 days

Cedar is slower than asphalt by design — course spacing and fastening depth are craft work.

Cedar costs, complete

Installed cedar typically runs $28,000–$60,000 on homes we serve, plus $800–$1,500 in cleaning/treatment every 3–5 years. Composite shake alternatives land 20–30% below cedar with near-zero maintenance. We'll price both honestly.

Cedar Shake Roofing: straight answers

How long does a cedar roof last here?

Maintained: 25–35 years. Unmaintained under fir canopy: sometimes 12. The maintenance isn't optional in this climate — it's the price of the look.

Is cedar allowed in wildfire zones?

Increasingly restricted east of the Cascades. Pressure-treated Class B assemblies exist, but in high-risk zones we'll usually steer you to Class A composite shake or metal — and tell you why.

Can you repair just part of my shake roof?

Often, yes. South- and west-facing planes fail years before shaded northern ones. Sectional restoration can buy a decade at a fraction of replacement.
