How wood-clad actually works — and where the moisture risk lives
A wood-clad window is a wood frame wrapped on the exterior in a protective cladding — usually extruded aluminum or fiberglass — so you get a stainable, paintable wood interior and a weather face that shrugs off Northwest rain and UV. Aluminum cladding is the most durable exterior; fiberglass cladding pairs stability with a paintable surface. The honest catch is water: wood-clad only stays trouble-free when it's flashed and installed right, because moisture that gets behind the cladding has wood to rot. That's a detailing problem, not a product flaw, and it's exactly where sloppy installs bite years later. We spec species and finishes for our climate, and we flash and seal every opening like the exterior wall it is.

Every opening measured to fit, with interior species, stain or paint, and exterior cladding color chosen for the room and the exposure.

Old units out, openings checked for rot, new units set square, insulated, and flashed carefully — because with wood behind the cladding, the water detail is everything.

Wood-clad sits at the premium end of the frame materials we install, above vinyl and generally above fiberglass. You're paying for the real-wood interior, the architectural profiles, and the finish flexibility — not better energy numbers, which come from the glass package on any frame. It earns the premium on character homes and rooms where the interior look is the goal. Size, species, finish, and glass move the number, and whole-home projects get volume pricing in writing.

Will a wood-clad window rot in our climate?
The exterior cladding is there specifically so it won't — aluminum or fiberglass takes the weather, not the wood. The risk is water getting behind the cladding through a bad flashing detail, which then has wood to rot. Installed and flashed correctly, wood-clad holds up fine here; installed carelessly, it's the frame most likely to bite you. The install matters more than the brand.
How much maintenance does the wood interior need?
Interior wood is protected from weather, so it mostly needs what any finished wood in your home needs — keep it clean and refresh the finish over the years if it sees hard sun. The exterior cladding needs no painting at all. It's far less upkeep than the old all-wood windows people remember.
Is wood-clad more energy-efficient than vinyl or fiberglass?
Not meaningfully from the frame — energy performance comes from the glass package, coatings, and gas fill, which we can spec the same on any frame. Choose wood-clad for the interior look and architectural fit, not for a lower bill. We'll size the glass to the room regardless of frame.
Can you match the profiles on my old windows?
Often, yes — wood-clad lines carry deeper, more traditional profiles and grille patterns than vinyl can, which is why they suit character homes. We'll show you what's available against your existing trim before anything is ordered.
