The parts that actually drive efficiency

A window's performance comes from a few specific pieces, and it's worth knowing them because that's where honest value lives. Low-E coatings are microscopically thin metallic layers on the glass that reflect heat — and the right one for our heating-dominated climate is tuned differently than the glass sold for the sunbelt, so climate-appropriate coating matters. Gas fills like argon between the panes slow heat transfer better than plain air. Warm-edge spacers replace the old conductive metal spacer at the glass edge, cutting the cold line and the condensation that follows it. And air leakage — the draft path around and through the unit — is decided as much by the install as the window: a great window gap-and-caulked into a crooked opening underperforms a modest one set square, insulated, and flashed. We spec the coating and fill to your exposures and seal every opening properly, because that combination is what a lower bill and a warmer room are actually made of.

    We look at which openings face sun, wind, and noise, then match the Low-E coating, gas fill, and spacer to each — not one spec for the whole house.

    Old units out, openings checked for rot, new units set square, insulated around the frame, flashed, and sealed — because air leakage is won or lost right here.

What efficiency actually costs — and what it doesn't guarantee

The energy-efficient glass package is a modest step over base glass on most lines, and it's almost always worth taking in this climate. What we won't do is promise a specific dollar savings or payback year — real returns depend on your current windows, your home, your heating system, and utility rates, and anyone quoting you a precise number is guessing or selling. What we will promise is a warmer room next to the glass, less condensation, and a unit sealed to actually deliver what the glass is rated for. Frame material, size, and glass package move the price, and whole-home projects get volume pricing in writing.

Honestly, we won't hand you a number, because a real one depends on what you have now, your home, your heating system, and your rates — the specific savings and payback figures in window ads are marketing, not measurements. Replacing failed or single-pane units delivers the biggest gain; going from decent double-pane to a premium package saves far less. We'll tell you which of your windows are actually worth replacing for energy and which aren't.

What's Low-E glass, and do I need it here?

Low-E is a microscopically thin coating that reflects heat while letting light through. In our heating-dominated climate, yes — it keeps warmth in during our long cool season and can reject summer solar heat on sun-facing openings. The key is the right coating for this climate, not the sunbelt version; we spec it by exposure.

Do triple-pane and gas fills matter for efficiency?

Gas fills like argon help meaningfully and cost little. Triple-pane adds efficiency and cuts noise, but the energy gain over a good double-pane is smaller than people expect — it pays off most in Spokane-area winters and on noise. We'll tell you where it's worth it and where it isn't.

Can a good window still perform badly?

Yes — that's the part the showrooms skip. A high-rated window gap-and-caulked into a crooked opening leaks air and underdelivers its numbers. Air-sealing, insulating, and flashing the install is half the performance, which is why we measure every opening and set every unit square.
