Shingles are the part you see. These seven layers are what actually keep the water out for 25 years. Scroll through the stack — this is what a licensed inspector is checking on every one of them.

The roof deck
The plywood or OSB everything else fastens to. Soft, rotted, or delaminated decking hiding under old shingles is the #1 surprise on a tear-off — and it has to be replaced by the sheet, never shingled over. That's why an honest bid prices decking repair per sheet up front.

Ice & water shield
A self-sealing membrane at the eaves and valleys — exactly where Northwest rain and snowmelt back up. It seals around every nail that punctures it. Skip it here and you get the maddening 'the roof is brand new but it still leaks.'

Synthetic underlayment
The full-deck backup layer beneath the shingles. Modern synthetics don't wrinkle, tear, or rot the way old felt paper does. It's the second line of defense for the day — years out — when a shingle finally lifts.

Drip edge & flashing
Metal at every edge and penetration — eaves, rakes, chimneys, valleys, pipe boots, vents. Here's the secret most homeowners never hear: the majority of roof leaks aren't through the shingles at all. They're at a flashing detail someone rushed.

Starter strip
A sealed first course along the eaves and rakes so wind can't get a fingernail under the first row of shingles. It costs almost nothing to include and it's where blow-offs begin when it's skipped to shave a bid.

Architectural shingles
The visible, rated layer everyone shops on. But the same shingle installed two different ways lasts two different lifetimes — nailing line, fastener count, and proper sealing are what the manufacturer's warranty actually hangs on.

Ridge cap & ventilation
The system has to breathe: cool air in at the soffits, hot moist air out at the ridge. Get the balance wrong and the attic bakes the shingles from below and grows moss and rot from within — the failure you never see from the street until it's expensive.
