Can I put rain chains everywhere instead of downspouts?
No, and we won't pretend otherwise. Chains are a feature for select, lower-volume outlets — an entry, a courtyard, a garden wall. The main roof planes that shed most of your home's water need sized downspouts to move that volume without splashing or overwhelming the landscape. We mix the two: chains where they work, downspouts where the water demands it.
Will a rain chain splash or make a mess?
In a light rain, it's the pleasant sound people install them for. In a heavy or wind-driven storm on an oversized run, yes — it can splash and blow off the chain. That's exactly why location and roof-area matching come first. Sized to a suitable outlet and paired with a real basin, splash is controlled; forced onto a firehose of a downspout, it isn't.
