Real slate is quarried stone — nothing matches its lifespan or look, and few roofs justify the investment like a historic or high-end home. The craft isn't the slate; it's everything around it: copper or stainless flashing that lasts as long as the stone, correct fasteners that won't rust and drop tiles, and a structure engineered for the weight. We also repair and restore existing slate — the more common ask — matching salvaged or new stone and rebuilding the flashing that actually failed. Where the budget or structure won't carry natural slate, synthetic slate is the honest alternative.

We grade the slate itself, the flashing, and the framing separately — often the stone has decades left and only the metal needs work.

Slate is set and holed by hand, flashing formed on site, then inspected plane by plane. This is slow, deliberate work — the opposite of a one-day tear-off.
