For most homes, it's the smarter choice than the real thing — you get the slate or cedar look with Class 4 impact and Class A fire ratings, a fraction of the weight, and a 50-year warranty. Real slate or cedar still wins on pure authenticity; synthetic wins on almost everything else.
Will synthetic handle our moss and rain?
Better than cedar and about like slate — the polymer doesn't feed moss the way wood grain does, and it won't split or rot. Shaded slopes still want the occasional treatment, but the maintenance is a fraction of real cedar.
Does it need special structure like tile or slate?
No — that's a big part of the appeal. Synthetic weighs far less than tile or natural slate, so it installs on standard framing with no structural upgrade, unlike the materials it imitates.
