The First Wood to Rot, and the Easiest to Ignore

Signs to watch

Is this you?

Peeling paint or dark streaks behind the gutters

Fascia hides behind the gutter, stays wet longest, and rots from the back where you never see it. Peeling paint on the face is the late warning, not the early one.

Soffit sagging, stained, or pulling loose

The underside of your eave is also your attic's intake vent. When it stains or drops, water is getting in and airflow is getting blocked — usually both at once.

You can push a screwdriver into the wood

Soft, spongy fascia or trim means the rot is already advanced. Painting over it buys a season; the fix is replacing the board and finding why it got wet.

Gutters sagging or pulling away from the house

Gutters are only as solid as the fascia they hang on. When the board behind them turns punky, the spikes and hangers lose their grip and the whole run starts to drop.

Your options

Fix the wood and the reason it rotted

We replace rotted fascia and rakeboards, repair or re-vent damaged soffit, and rebuild the trim details around your roofline in primed cedar, PVC, or fiber-cement trim where you want to stop repainting for good. But swapping the board is half the job — fascia rots because water is getting behind it, so we chase down the cause: a failed drip edge, an overflowing gutter, or a flashing gap at the roof-to-wall line. Fix the board without fixing the source and you'll be back here in three winters.

The method

How we do it

  1. 01

Find the rot and the source

We probe the wood to map how far the rot runs, then trace back to what's keeping it wet — drip edge, gutter pitch, or flashing. Photos of everything.

  2. 02

    Fixed-price scope

You see exactly which boards get replaced, in what material, and what we're doing to keep them dry — approved in writing before we start.

  3. 03

    Replace, re-vent, and finish

New boards cut and primed on all sides, soffit ventilation restored, and trim finished to match. Before/after photos for your records.

Straight numbers

What trim and fascia repair actually costs

Most trim, soffit, and fascia repairs we do run $600–$4,500 depending on how many boards are gone, height and access, and whether we're correcting the water source behind them. Spot fascia repair sits at the low end; wrapping the full roofline in maintenance-free PVC or fiber-cement trim runs higher and ends the repaint cycle. Because this work usually rides alongside a roof, gutter, or siding project, bundling it saves the second mobilization — ask for the combined number.

Where we do this work

Trim, Soffit & Fascia: straight answers

Can you just repair the rotted section or does the whole board have to go?

It depends on how far the rot traveled. A short soft spot at a joint can be cut back and scarfed; rot that runs the length of the board means the board goes. We probe first and show you what we found before deciding — no replacing sound wood to pad the bill.

Should I switch to PVC or composite trim so I never repaint?

Often worth it on fascia and rakeboards, which take the worst of the weather. PVC and fiber-cement trim don't rot and hold paint far longer than wood. We'll price both — real wood costs less up front and costs it back in repainting and eventual rot.

Do you have to remove my gutters to replace the fascia behind them?

Usually yes — the fascia is the board your gutters hang on, so it comes down to get the new board in. It's the natural moment to check the gutters themselves and re-set the drip edge and pitch, which is often why the fascia rotted in the first place.

Why does my fascia keep rotting even after it was painted?

Because paint treats the symptom, not the cause. Fascia rots from the back — from a gutter overflowing, a missing drip edge, or water wicking off the roof edge. Until the water is redirected, a fresh coat just hides the problem while the board keeps failing underneath.
