Siding is the largest exterior surface on your home and its first line of defense against a wet Northwest year. When homeowners here narrow the choice down to two serious materials, it’s usually these: James Hardie fiber cement and LP SmartSide engineered wood. Both are legitimate, both last decades when they’re installed right, and they’re different enough that the choice actually comes down to what you value. Here’s the honest comparison.
What each one actually is
James Hardie is fiber cement — a blend of Portland cement, sand, and cellulose fiber pressed into lap boards, panels, and shingle profiles. It’s a mineral product, which is the source of most of its advantages: it doesn’t rot, doesn’t burn, and doesn’t feed pests. It’s the name most people mean when they say fiber cement.
LP SmartSide is engineered wood — wood strands bound with resins and treated through the entire board with a zinc borate process that resists rot, fungal decay, and termites. It comes pre-primed from the factory in lap, panel, and trim profiles with a deep cedar-grain texture. It’s wood-based, engineered to survive the wet.
Moisture and fire in the PNW
This is where the region tips the scale. On moisture, Hardie has the paper advantage: because it’s mineral, it simply doesn’t rot or swell when it gets wet, and in our climate that’s worth something. SmartSide’s borate treatment genuinely resists decay and it holds up well installed to spec — but it’s wood at its core, which makes it less forgiving of a missed detail. A poorly flashed window or an unsealed field cut is a bigger risk on engineered wood than on fiber cement.
On fire, it’s not close. Fiber cement is non-combustible — it won’t burn. That matters more every year in wildfire-exposure areas east of the Cascades and in the wildland-urban interface. Engineered wood, treated or not, is still wood and doesn’t carry the same fire resistance. If you’re in a fire-risk zone, that alone often decides it.
Weight, workability, and look
The trade-offs flip here. SmartSide is lighter and easier to work — it cuts faster, hangs faster, and is more forgiving on a ladder, which is part of why its labor cost is lower. Hardie is heavier and more exacting; cutting it kicks up silica dust and demands proper technique and clearances, so the install is slower and more skilled.
On look, it’s taste. SmartSide’s deep cedar-grain texture reads warmer and more like real wood, which a lot of Northwest homeowners want. Hardie’s profiles are crisper and more mineral, with factory ColorPlus finishes in a wide color range. Neither is “better” — they’re different aesthetics, and we bring samples of both so you’re choosing with your eyes, not a brochure.
Maintenance and the repaint cycle
Neither is maintenance-free — no siding is here. Both are paintable and both will eventually need a repaint. The difference is timing. Hardie’s factory ColorPlus finish holds color for years before it needs refreshing, which stretches the interval between repaints. SmartSide comes pre-primed and is designed to be painted, in the shop or on site, and it holds paint well when the prep is right — you’re just likely to be back on the repaint cycle a bit sooner than with a factory Hardie finish. Budget for painting either one down the road; Hardie mostly buys you more time.
Cost tier
Relative, not fabricated: engineered wood generally sits between vinyl and fiber cement on installed cost. So LP SmartSide typically lands below James Hardie on both material and labor — it’s lighter, faster to hang, and the material runs less. Fiber cement’s heavier stock and more exacting install push it higher. Where you actually land depends on square footage, number of stories, trim and corner complexity, and what the tear-off uncovers, which is why we quote fixed bids on both and set them next to each other rather than guessing a number over the phone.
The verdict — and the thing that matters more than either
Choose James Hardie if moisture and fire resistance top your list, you’re staying long-term, or you’re in a fire-exposure zone — it’s the heavyweight for our climate. Choose LP SmartSide if you want the warmth and look of real wood, a lighter and generally lower up-front cost, and you’re comfortable that it’s installed to spec.
But here’s the part that outranks the material choice: the drainage plane behind the siding. Housewrap, flashing at every window, door, and penetration, correct ground and roof clearances, and a rainscreen gap where the wall calls for it — that assembly is what keeps water moving back out of the wall. Siding installed over hidden moisture problems, or without those details, fails no matter which brand is on the surface.
