The Best Fence Types for Pacific Northwest Homes
The short answer
Cedar is the Northwest default for looks and value; vinyl and composite trade a higher up-front cost for near-zero upkeep. But the material matters less than how the posts are set in our wet ground — proper depth, a gravel drainage base, and ground-contact posts are what make a fence last instead of lean.

There’s no single “best” fence for the Pacific Northwest, but there are honest trade-offs — and one truth that matters more than any of them: a fence lives or dies at the post, not the panel. Get the post-setting and drainage right and any of these materials will serve you for years. Get it wrong and even the best boards lean within a few winters. With that said, here’s how the common choices actually compare in our wet ground.
Cedar privacy — the Northwest default
Western red cedar is what most Northwest homes want, and for good reason. It’s naturally rot- and insect-resistant, it looks right against the trees, and it’s the best value up front of the materials we install. You can build it in dog-ear, flat-top, or full board-on-board for true privacy, in 4-, 6-, or 8-foot heights where the jurisdiction allows.
The honest catch: unsealed or under-graded cedar cups, checks, and silvers fast in our wet-dry cycles. That’s not a flaw in the wood so much as a maintenance reality. Kept cleaned and sealed, cedar holds up well for a long time. Left to weather, it grays to silver — which some people love and some don’t. Board grade and how the posts are set decide how it ages far more than the stain does.
Board-on-board (the “good-neighbor” build)
Board-on-board is a layout, not a different wood: overlapping pickets on alternating sides of the rail. It does two things standard picket spacing can’t. First, it closes the sightlines that open up once cedar shrinks in its first dry summer — so the privacy you paid for stays privacy. Second, because it looks finished from both sides, it’s the classic “good-neighbor” fence that reads clean on your yard and theirs. Add a cap-and-trim top and you get a finished line that also sheds water off the end grain, where wood would otherwise wick and rot. It sits at the upper end of cedar pricing and earns it.
Horizontal cedar — the modern look
Horizontal cedar has become the go-to for modern and craftsman homes, and it’s a genuinely handsome fence. The thing to know before you commit: horizontal boards put more span between posts under load, and flat boards hold water differently than vertical pickets shedding straight down. That makes post spacing, board grade, and a good finish more important here, not less. Built right it’s beautiful; built cheap it sags and cups faster than a vertical fence would. It’s a look worth paying for the right install to get.
Vinyl — done maintaining wood
Vinyl is for homeowners who are simply done with the repaint-and-reseal cycle. It doesn’t rot, doesn’t need staining, won’t bleed rust, and hoses clean instead of graying out. Quality vinyl holds its color and reads as new far longer than wood.
But cheap vinyl has earned its bad name, and it fails two predictable ways: rails sag because there’s no internal reinforcement, and panels pop loose in wind because the posts weren’t set for the load. Both are install-and-spec problems, not the material’s fault. The vinyl worth buying uses steel- or aluminum-reinforced bottom rails and posts spaced and depth-set for your wind exposure. Expect it to run 20–40% more up front than comparable cedar — money you give back in maintenance you never do.
Composite — color that stays
Composite is the premium end: it won’t rot, cup, gray, or feed insects, and it holds its color through the wet-dry seasons so year ten looks like year one — no paintbrush. Its privacy panels also don’t shrink and open up the way wood does when it dries, so the privacy you buy is the privacy you keep.
The one way composite fails is the one worth understanding: it’s heavier than cedar, so a frame spec’d for wood can sag under it. The fix is the manufacturer’s engineered post-and-rail system, set right — not saving money on the frame. Composite costs meaningfully more than both cedar and vinyl up front. Why the post beats the panel — every time
Notice the pattern running through all of these: the material sets the look and the upkeep, but the post system sets the lifespan. A fence leans because the post rotted or loosened at the soil line, where our wet ground works first — almost never because the boards failed. That’s why the part that actually matters is invisible: holes below frost line, a gravel base so water drains away from the post instead of pooling at the wood, ground-contact-rated posts set plumb in concrete, and hot-dipped or coated hardware that won’t streak rust down new boards. When to repair instead of replace
If your current fence is leaning but the boards are largely sound, you may not need a whole new fence — you may need the posts reset. A stretch or two of failed posts is often a repair, not a rebuild. Once post failure runs the length of the fence, though, throwing good boards onto rotten posts just delays the real fix. The honest test is how many posts have gone at the soil line, and that’s a judgment call worth having someone dig in and check before you spend.
